THE DIGEST
Finally some good housing news 🏠
Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod is building two new three-bedroom homes on Red Top Road, set to be finished this fall. They're for local families, including a veteran and an educator with two kids, and a pediatric nurse with four children from Cape Cod Hospital. These houses are super eco-friendly, with solar power and heat pumps. Habitat's been doing this since the late '80s, and they're always looking for more land to keep building more homes in the future. If you're interested, you can apply by May 13th for a chance to own one of eight additional affordable homes to be built in Dennis and Wellfleet. Read the full story.
Emergency services “menage a trois” 🚑
Barnstable is set to join forces with Sandwich and Yarmouth for a new regional emergency communications center, a move expected to revolutionize emergency services on Cape Cod. The Town Council unanimously approved an intermunicipal agreement laying the groundwork for the initiative, following similar support from Sandwich.
The agreement paves the way for the towns to leverage incentive grants from the State 911 Department, which strongly advocates for regional Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs). The proposed Regional Emergency Communications Center (RECC) hopes to centralize dispatch operations, resulting in major cost savings and better emergency services. With initial grants secured and plans in motion, the towns anticipate significant benefits, including increased staffing, streamlined operations, improved response times and better public safety. All the aquarium ladies 🦭
In Falmouth, near the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, stands a piece of Cape Cod history—the nation's oldest aquarium, started in 1875. Biologist Katie Dever, a Cape Cod native, leads the team at the NOAA Fisheries Woods Hole Science Aquarium, offering visitors a rare behind-the-scenes experience. What sets this aquarium apart is its all-women team, inspiring young girls interested in science. Every year, the team preps 8,000 pounds of fish and cares for residents like Stumpy, a diamondback terrapin turtle, and the beloved Bubba, a 24-year-old harbor seal, a favorite among visitors. The aquarium, open year-round and free to visit, relies on donations to support conservation and education efforts. Read the fully story.

Cape Cod once again faces the looming threat of hurricanes. The 2024 hurricane season forecast from Colorado State University suggests a very active season, with an increased risk of major hurricanes making landfall in the continental US and the Caribbean. Cape Cod's vulnerability to hurricanes was starkly demonstrated by Hurricane Bob in 1991, which caused extensive damage, including power outages, coastal erosion, and millions of dollars in losses. The forecasted increase in named storm impacts for Massachusetts, including Cape Cod, highlights the need for vigilance as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches. Read the full story.
