THE DIGEST

Horse finds a “stable” future 🐴

After his owner passed away, Brady the horse faced an uncertain future. Named after Tom Brady, he was cherished by his owner Barbara Collins of Sandwich, MA, who wanted to be buried alongside him. Concerns arose about his fate, with some considering euthanasia due to his age and injury. However, others, including state Rep. Steve Xiarhos, opposed this plan. Xiarhos announced on Thursday that a horse rescue on Cape Cod would provide Brady with a forever home. Thanks to community support, Brady will now enjoy comfort and care in his final years. Downtown Falmouth still rebuilding 🚒

Recovery efforts continue after a New Year's Day fire in downtown Falmouth. No serious injuries occurred, but four businesses and apartments were impacted. As Cape Cod's tourist season starts, some affected businesses remain closed while repairs continue. The goal is to have everything ready for the busy summer. The Falmouth Chamber of Commerce emphasizes patience and encourages support for local businesses once they reopen. The Pickle Jar Kitchen, a popular spot affected by the fire, hopes to reopen in early June. Read the full story.

From housing cash to housing people 🏢

When Cape Cod 5 announced they were leaving their headquarters on West Road in 2019, the town got busy. They didn't want that prime spot to go to just go on the market. So, after some brainstorming and planning, developer Pennrose jumped in to transform the property into a new multi-family rental development. It's a big project, with 62 units planned, and almost half of them will be affordable. Funding from federal, state, and local sources is making it all possible, including a hefty $1.5 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act. The project represents a team effort among local communities to address the regional housing crisis. Read the fully story.

Update: Wendy has been found 🍾

Over sixty years ago, a 14-year-old girl from Worcester tossed a message in a bottle into the sea. A few weeks ago, Kate Rivers found that very bottle washed up on a Cape beach. With the help of social media and a local reporter, she tracked down the letter writer’s daughter, Aja Talarico, who saw it as a sign from her late mother, Wendy Warner. The letter's discovery brought back memories for Talarico, who recognized her mom's handwriting. It's a bittersweet connection for Talarico, who lost her mother three years ago, but now feels a renewed bond through this unexpected find. Read the full story.

LOCAL BUSINESS

From draft root beers to toasted bagels 🥯

Bagelhound is set to give a nostalgic spot a fresh start by opening a new location in the iconic former A&W spot on Route 28 in Harwich Port. Claire Adams, co-owner of Bagel Hound with her husband Ellery Althaus, sees it as a special opportunity to breathe new life into a place with a rich root beer history. With existing locations in Provincetown and Wellfleet, expanding to Harwich is a big step for the brand. While there's still some work to be done before opening, Adams is eager to bring their beloved bagels to the new location as soon as possible. Read the fully story.

CIVIL NEWS

Hard pass on bridge tolls 💰🌁

Regional leaders aren't exactly thrilled about the idea of tolls on the Cape Cod Canal Bridges. While these aging structures are in dire need of a $4 billion overhaul, state officials aren't sold on tolls just yet.

Fifth Barnstable District State Representative Steven Xiarhos isn't holding back either. He's opposing the toll idea, arguing it would hit working families hard, even if it did help fund the projects.

With over $1 billion already earmarked for the project, the toll debate is heating up as these nearly century-old bridges struggle to keep up with modern demands. Read the full story.

Migrants peace out from Yarmouth 🚚

Migrants who had been living in a Yarmouth motel are now being moved to other areas across Massachusetts. The move comes after the families had been living in motel since last September, but the state did not give advance notice to the town about the transfers. Despite the lack of a heads up, local officials are working to ensure a smooth transition for the families. The motel had been in violation of a local bylaw by housing the families for an extended period. As the relocation process unfolds, community members are extending support to the families, emphasizing the importance of providing assistance and resources to help them transition to their next steps.
