THE DIGEST
From lobster rolls to landlord 📃
Rob Anderson, a restaurant owner in Provincetown offers a sobering look at the town's extreme housing crisis and its impact on the local economy. The popular tourist destination, with only 3,700 year-round residents, sees its population multiply up to 16 times in summer, creating a desperate need for seasonal workers who often struggle to find affordable housing.
Anderson had to invest over a million dollars in worker housing to keep his business running, highlighting how the housing shortage directly affects local entrepreneurs. He draws parallels between Provincetown's challenges and broader national issues, including wealth inequality and immigration policy gaps, emphasizing that while community efforts help, they can't fully address the deep-rooted societal inequalities at play. Route 28 revival 🏠
In Dennis, three redevelopment projects are transforming unused commercial spaces into much-needed housing. These projects will create 44 new one- and two-bedroom apartments, with 25% designated as affordable housing. The developments include:
1. The Columns: A historic Greek Revival house being converted into 16 ownership units.
2. 775 Main St.: A former office building redeveloped into 24 rental units, including six affordable apartments.
3. 530 Main St.: A former jewelry store being renovated to include four housing units, with one affordable unit.
These projects, utilizing special permits rather than the 40B process, hope to increase housing density and encourage the redevelopment of existing structures. The town's Housing Coordinator, Maggie Spade-Aguilar, notes the positive community response to repurposing unused buildings. The developments are part of ongoing efforts to address the housing crunch on Cape Cod, with Dennis currently having 5.45% of its year-round housing inventory considered affordable.. Ancient rights & modern battles 🛶
On Cape Cod's shores, CheeNulKa Pocknett of the Wampanoag tribe continues a fishing tradition thousands of years old, but fraught with modern challenges. As he digs for quahogs in Mashpee's Little River, Pocknett navigates not just water, but a complex web of property rights and environmental issues.
The tribe's Aboriginal rights to fish on private property often spark conflicts with local homeowners and officials. Meanwhile, development and pollution have devastated once-thriving waterways, forcing the Wampanoag to adapt their practices. They now manage a shellfish farm, blending modern aquaculture with tradition. Yet for Pocknett and his tribe, fishing remains more than sustenance—it's a vital expression of their heritage and sovereignty. Read the full story.

Treadmill among the stars 🚀
NASA astronaut Suni Williams, originally from Needham, “ran” in the Falmouth Road Race on Sunday while aboard the International Space Station. Williams ran the race on a treadmill, using a harness to counteract the zero-gravity environment. This isn't her first space race; she previously ran the same event in 2012 and the Boston Marathon in 2007 during earlier space missions.
Williams, who has family ties to Falmouth, praised the race for its community impact. Currently on her third ISS mission, Williams has been in space since June due to issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. NASA is working on a plan to bring her and her crewmate home, with a decision expected soon, though their stay could potentially extend to 2025. Read the full story.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Art & marriage 🎨
Tom and Carol Odell, a married couple of artists, have been living and working in a unique property on Chatham's Main Street for nearly 50 years. Their Greek Revival house, built in the 1850s, serves as both their home and a showcase for their art, with showrooms, individual studios, and a jewelry workshop. Tom is a sculptor and jeweler working with metal, while Carol specializes in non-representational painting techniques.
The Odells appreciate their location's balance of accessibility and seclusion, valuing their artistic partnership and the mutual understanding it brings. This summer, they've introduced a guest artist to their gallery, adding another dimension to their distinctive artistic oasis in Chatham. Read the full story.
