THE DIGEST

Wellfleet beaches catch the Wi-Fi wave 🛜

Wellfleet just rolled out free Wi-Fi at Lecount Hollow Beach, with White Crest and Cahoon Hollow next in line. This $255,000 project aims to boost shark safety by improving emergency communications, sparked by a 2018 fatal shark attack where first responders struggled with spotty cell service.

While town officials are riding the wave of success, beachgoers are split. Some locals worry it'll spoil the laid-back vibe, while others see it as a lifeline in emergencies. Most folks on the sand seemed oblivious to the new tech, still building sandcastles and soaking up rays.

But the Wi-Fi might just be the beginning. There's talk of adding beach cams to help with parking woes, though that idea got a hard pass from the select board. Read the full story.

Oyster trash becomes ocean gold 🦪

Cape Cod's getting clever with trash. Local restaurants are teaming up with the Massachusetts Oyster Project to give oyster shells a second life. Instead of cluttering landfills, these discarded shells are sunbathing for a year before being tossed back into the water.

Why bother? These recycled shells create perfect homes for baby oysters, help clean Cape waters, and even protect shorelines. In just three years, they've kept over 92,000 pounds of shells out of the trash.

Plus, these little guys are multitaskers - they're not just good eats, they're nature's own water filters. So next time you're enjoying some local oysters, remember: those shells are likely heading back to the sea to do some good. Read the full story.

Pickleball sours home sale 🥒

Judith Comeau's Sagamore Beach home isn't selling, and the supposed culprit? Pickleball. Yep, you heard that right.

The Sagamore Beach Colony Club plopped some courts just 50 feet from Comeau's place, and now the constant pop-pop-pop is driving potential buyers away. After eight months of crickets (well, more like pickleball whacks), Comeau's pulled her house off the market.

This isn't just a one-off spat. Turns out, pickleball noise is becoming a real headache for homeowners across the Cape. There's even a national Facebook support group for folks driven bonkers by the racket.

Comeau's not throwing in the towel just yet. She's lawyered up and is hoping to serve the club with a request to relocate the courts. If that fails, we might see this pickle land in court. Read the full story.

Sand, sun, and spending 🏖️

Cape Cod National Seashore is raking in more than just seashells. A new National Park Service report shows 3.8 million visitors spent $533 million in nearby communities last year. This cash splash supported over 6,600 local jobs and boosted the economy by $730 million.

Park Service bigwigs are touting this as a prime example of parks and communities teaming up for mutual benefit. Seashore Superintendent Jennifer Flynn gave a nod to local towns, crediting their services for enhancing the visitor experience.

Nationally, 325.5 million park visitors injected $26.4 billion into local economies. Lodging and restaurants were the big winners, scoring the highest economic contributions. Read the full story.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Cinemas to transform into entertainment mecca 🍿

Bill Hanney, the owner of several New England theaters and cinemas, is cooking up something big at the Cape Cod Mall. He's taking over the Regal Cinemas space and turning it into a one-stop entertainment shop.

We're talking luxury movie theaters, a live performance venue, comedy clubs, and even a sports bar. Hanney's got grand plans to bring his Rhode Island and Beverly shows to Hyannis, potentially drawing folks from P-town to Boston.

The mall makeover comes with a hefty price tag of $4-5 million, but Hanney's footing the bill himself. If all goes smoothly, we might see the first bits open next summer.

Local bigwigs seem pretty jazzed about the idea. It could be a shot in the arm for nearby restaurants and bring some year-round razzle-dazzle to our neck of the woods. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

Falmouth resident charged in drug case 🚨

A four-month investigation in Falmouth culminated Tuesday with the arrest of 31-year-old Kane Washington on drug trafficking charges. The operation involved local police, state police, and the DEA's Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Washington was apprehended during a traffic stop, where authorities discovered significant quantities of illegal substances: 90 grams of fentanyl and nearly 11 grams of crack cocaine.

A subsequent search of Washington's safe revealed a "ghost gun", five high-capacity magazines, approximately 150 rounds of ammunition, and nearly $52,000 in cash.

Washington now faces multiple charges, including trafficking fentanyl and possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. Read the full story.
