☀️ Power Restoration Stretched to Today
Plus: The restaurant that knows your name (and your order)
Good morning Cape Cod and TGIF! After days without power following Monday's blizzard, electricity should be fully restored by tonight. We've all learned valuable lessons this week, like 'generators are worth it' and 'you can absolutely wear the same sweatpants for four days straight.' 🙂
Click here for a comprehensive list of storm recovery resources.
In this week’s Cape Coddah:

Plan to save boat meadow marsh

Let’s get to it.

💡 Power Restoration Stretched to Today
Three days after the February 23 blizzard knocked out power to over 150,000 Eversource customers, about 54,712 Cape Cod customers and 759 Martha's Vineyard customers remained without electricity as of 10AM February 26, with National Grid reporting 1,289 affected customers on Nantucket.
Falmouth had the most customers waiting—10,383—followed by Barnstable with 8,427. But smaller towns faced more sweeping impacts: 98.71% of Wellfleet remained without power, while Brewster and Orleans had over half their customers in the dark.
Utility crews from other states are working around the clock, with most Cape towns estimated to reach "substantially complete" restoration (99% of customers) by 11:59 p.m. Friday, February 27. Mashpee was already listed as substantially complete. Read more»
❄️ Neighbors Helping Neighbors
When a pine tree crashed through Hannah Koudelka's West Yarmouth bedroom ceiling during Monday's blizzard, she and her brother found themselves stranded without power, an inoperable car, and unplowed streets, until help finally arrived Wednesday.
Across Cape Cod, the community rallied. Red Cross volunteers from Western New York staffed three shelters housing 443 people overnight Tuesday, with National Guard troops delivering "comfort kits" containing hygiene essentials. Family Table Collaborative in South Yarmouth ramped up from 800 meals weekly to 5,000 daily, distributing to 13 shelters from Bourne to Provincetown with help from World Central Kitchen. Whole Foods donated all their food to the organization since they were the only one who could reach the store.
Leah Tulin, a West Dennis resident who moved from California four months ago, found refuge at Family Table's warming center with her three dogs. "I hadn't known many people I could call on," she said, grateful the center allowed pets and hoping to volunteer once her power returns. Read more»

📄 The Plan to Save Boat Meadow Marsh
Mass Audubon received a $308,346 grant to assess and design restoration for Eastham's 264-acre Boat Meadow River salt marsh, which shows degradation at its mouth and upstream that creates a dangerous feedback loop as sea level rises.
When peat decomposes, marshes lose elevation; as more water flows over sunken areas, vegetation dies and further loosens the peat beneath. Purple marsh crabs, whose population exploded after predator declines, eat marsh grass roots and expose peat to erosion.
The marsh includes a former cranberry bog where earthen berms and artificial ditches stop proper drainage. Monitoring runs through 2027-2028, with restoration starting late 2028 "if we're lucky," said senior coastal ecologist Sara Grady. The marsh is also designated priority habitat for endangered saltmarsh sparrows. Read more»

🐈⬛ MSPCA Now Sheltering Pets
MSPCA-Angell evacuated nearly 50 animals from its Cape Cod shelter Tuesday after running low on generator fuel during widespread power outages, relocating 22 cats, 10 dogs, five kittens, six rats, and five guinea pigs to Nevins Farm and Boston locations.
After a public plea on Facebook, roughly a dozen people responded to help. A diesel delivery arrived late Tuesday night, allowing generators to operate "for approximately 40 hours per refuel."
The Cape shelter now serves as temporary housing for pets displaced by power outages through the SafePet program. "A lot of people will remain in houses without power where they're freezing because they can't bring their pets to a shelter," said VP Mike Keiley. Read more»

World Central Kitchen is mobilizing to provide hot meals to residents in storm shelters and warming centers, initially preparing food at Family Table Collaborative in South Yarmouth before hiring local restaurants once they regain power and food deliveries.

Chatham will accept credit cards at beaches for the first time this summer while raising parking fees to cover credit card costs and a 10% lifeguard salary increase, projected to generate $95,000 in new revenue.
Friends of the Bourne Rail Trail are rallying support for removing existing train tracks to build a 6.5-mile bike path connecting the Cape Cod Canal to Falmouth's Shining Sea Bikeway.

🍻 The Restaurant that Knows Your Name
The 400 East Restaurant & Bar in East Harwich has been serving comfort food since 1989, with manager Noah Rosen knowing 90% of the bar patrons after 12 years. Four employees have collectively worked there for 100 years combined.
The extensive menu features fresh salads, burgers, thin crust pizzas, pastas, and entrees with Caribbean influences from the kitchen's Jamaican, Haitian, Dominican, and Puerto Rican staff. Nightly specials include Monday sirloin and meatloaf, Tuesday pot roast, Wednesday pasta, Thursday-Saturday prime rib, and Sunday homestyle turkey dinner.
The restaurant offers a rewards program, takeout, call-ahead seating, and a private function room holding 65 guests. "We take pride in knowing our regulars' first names, their tendencies, what they like," Rosen said. Read more»

⚖️ Local Adviser Breached Fiduciary Duty
A federal court entered final judgment against Falmouth-based investment adviser Jeffrey Cutter and his firm Cutter Financial Group, ordering $150,000 in civil penalties for breaching fiduciary duties by selling fixed index annuities without adequate disclosure.
The SEC alleged Cutter earned up-front commissions of approximately 7% on annuity sales while receiving only 1.5-2% annual fees on managed advisory accounts, without disclosing this financial incentive to clients. He also allegedly recommended clients surrender existing annuities to purchase new ones, generating second commissions and sometimes triggering surrender charges.
After a seven-day trial, a jury found Cutter and CFG liable for violating Section 206(2) of the Investment Advisers Act. The judgment requires them to provide copies to all existing and new clients for five years. Read more»
