THE DIGEST

So much for “green” energy 💨

Cape Cod's offshore wind farm hit some turbulence this month when a massive blade on one of Vineyard Wind's turbines suffered a catastrophic failure. The 351-foot blade folded over and broke apart on July 13, scattering debris across local waters and beaches. GE Vernova, the blade's manufacturer, has pointed to a production issue at their Canadian factory as the likely culprit, admitting they missed a "material deviation" during quality checks.

Key points of this turbine trouble:

  • All operations at Vineyard Wind are suspended pending investigation.

  • Environmental experts say the debris is mostly harmless, but warn against barefoot beach strolls.

  • A hotline's been set up for reporting found debris - seems we've got a new type of seashell to collect this summer.

  • GE Vernova's using high-tech methods (think "ultrasound for blades") to inspect all offshore wind blades.

If you spot any turbine debris on our beaches, big or small, report it to Vineyard Wind's hotline at 833-609-5768 or use their online form at tinyurl.com/reportVWdebris. Read the full story.

Hard pass on the nuclear waste ☢️

Cape Cod Bay dodged a radioactive bullet this week. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) put the kibosh on Holtec International's plan to dump 1.1 million gallons of nuclear wastewater into our beloved bay.

This comes after the closure of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in 2019, which left Holtec with a radioactive hot potato to handle. Local environmental groups are calling it a win for the Cape's ecosystem and economy, while Holtec's scratching their heads over what to do with their glowing garbage.

The decision came after thousands of residents voiced their opposition, proving once again that when it comes to protecting our waters, Cape Coddahs aren't afraid to make some noise. Read the full story.

From tangled to tagged 🐢

Cape Cod Bay played host to an unexpected rescue mission last Thursday when a whooping 400-pound leatherback turtle was found tangled in fishing gear. Local heroes from the Barnstable harbormaster's office, New England Aquarium, and Center for Coastal Studies quickly responded, freeing the 6-foot giant from its predicament.

After a thorough health check, the turtle (now named "Phinney") was fitted with satellite and acoustic tags to track its movements. These high-tech accessories will help scientists monitor Phinney's ocean adventures and gather crucial data on leatherback behavior and survival post-rescue. Curious Cape Coddahs can follow Phinney's journey online, getting a turtle's-eye view of life in the Atlantic. Read the full story.

League preps future sportscasters ⚾️

Cape Cod's summer baseball league isn't just a training ground for future MLB stars - it's also where aspiring sports journalists come to play ball with their careers. Every year, college students flock to the Cape for unpaid internships, running media operations for all 10 teams. From calling plays to directing broadcasts, these rookies of the press box get a crash course in sports journalism over a grueling 40-game season.

While the gigs are unpaid, many interns see it as an invaluable experience. As one videographer put it, "You're going to get the best experience of a lifetime." The league's broadcasting program, which started in 2003, has already produced several professional sportscasters, including voices now heard on ESPN and NBC Sports Boston. Read the full story.

Juicing up the Cape 🥤

Harwich Port's health food haven, J-Bar, is juicing up for a big milestone. For a decade now, Erin Tucker has been blending, chopping, and spreading her way into hearts (and stomachs) with an array of vegan delights.

Now, as J-Bar celebrates its 10th birthday, Tucker's taking her green dream on the road to Chatham, with plans for a pop-up this August and a full-fledged second location next year.

As for Tucker herself? She's living proof that you are what you eat, crediting her 30-year plant-based lifestyle for her success. So whether you're a die-hard vegan or just looking to add some green to your routine, J-Bar's got you covered. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

Harwich thinking outside the box 🏡

Harwich is brewing up a new recipe to tackle the Cape's perennial housing crunch. The town's board of assessors is considering a tax break for property owners willing to rent out affordable units year-round.

Here's the scoop: homeowners could snag a $1,000 to $1,500 annual tax reduction for opening their doors to income-qualifying tenants. The plan caps at 30 units per year, potentially costing the town $30,000 annually. The funds will come from the existing overlay account, typically used for tax abatements. Board of assessors chair Richard Waystack sees this as another tool in the affordable housing toolbox, potentially enticing empty-nesters to carve out rental space in their oversized homes.

While the Select Board seems to be on board, they're still ironing out the details, like whether this plan can be served up at a special town meeting this November. Read the full story.
