CAPE DIGEST
🎬 Bourdain Biopic Takes Over Dennis
The now-closed Gina's by the Sea Restaurant in Dennis was transformed into a busy film set for "Tony," a biopic about the late chef Anthony Bourdain. For two and a half weeks, the 7,000-square-foot establishment hosted a cast and crew of 155 people, including Dominic Sessa ("The Holdovers") as young Bourdain and Antonio Banderas as his mentor.
Though Bourdain's early culinary life actually occurred in Provincetown at now-defunct restaurants The Flagship and Ciro & Sal's, filmmakers chose Gina's as their primary kitchen setting.
Craft services provider Jane Willwerth kept the hardworking crew fueled with 300 espresso shots daily during 15-hour filming days. The film, which previously shot in Provincetown, has no announced release date. Read more»
🩺 Sheriff Delivers on Jail Reform Promises
After two and a half years in office, Barnstable County Sheriff Donna Buckley has transformed healthcare and reentry services at the county jail, starting with ending the contract with prison healthcare company Wellpath, which had staffed only 20% of promised providers.
The jail now employs four mental health counselors, three substance abuse specialists, and four case managers who help arrange housing and services for those about to be released. Buckley reports big improvements—notably zero suicides since ending the Wellpath contract, compared to three in the previous two years. Read more»

🔑 Wrong G-Wagon, Right Key
When a 1991 Mercedes G-Wagon was reported stolen from Nantucket's Stop & Shop parking lot Sunday evening, islanders were skeptical—after all, where would someone take a stolen car on an island?
The mystery was solved Tuesday when Alex Miccio realized what happened: his elderly family friend had used Miccio's key to accidentally unlock and drive away in an identical G-Wagon belonging to someone else, parking it in a driveway off-island.
Nantucket Police Lieutenant Angus MacVicar confirmed no charges would be filed, noting this is a common occurrence on the island. "There are so many like vehicles, and so many people leave their keys in the vehicle that we often find it's a case of mistaken identity.” Read more»

🌳 Historic Site Reborn as Nature Trail
Twenty-five years after acquisition, Chatham celebrated the opening of the Marconi-RCA Conservation Trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Barbara Cotnam, who championed the project for two decades.
The 3-acre woodland near Ryder's Cove underwent a 3-year restoration beginning in 2021, funded by the Community Preservation Act and locals. Workers removed invasive species and restored native vegetation like eastern red cedar, white oak and pitch pine.
The scenic loop trail follows the coastal bank with views of the water, featuring educational kiosks about both the site's natural features and its history as a recreation area for staff of what was once America's busiest ship-to-shore radio station from 1914 to the 1990s. Read more»
AROUND THE CAPE
A crew member suffered serious injuries when fireworks prematurely exploded during setup at New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee.
Facing a shortage of qualified applicants, Chatham has replaced its lifeguard-trained beach patrol at dangerous Lighthouse Beach with untrained "beach monitors."
Brewster's short-term rental task force is grappling with unannounced mandatory safety inspections and working to create a registration system.
An East Falmouth biologist has encountered over six black widow spiders on her property this year.
LOCAL BUSINESS
🍬 Something Sweetish This Way Comes
A new international candy experience has arrived on Cape Cod with the opening of The Sweetish Fish, a Swedish candy truck parked at Off The Grid restaurant on Route 6A in Sandwich.
Owners Savanna Vaughn and Cara Crupi-Dulmaine were inspired after visiting a Swedish candy shop in New York last summer. By February 2025, their idea took shape, and by early June, their colorfully renovated truck was open for business—with customers lining up even in the rain.
The truck offers 23 different Swedish candies made with real cane sugar and no artificial dyes or flavoring, with about eight varieties available on a rotating basis. Many options are gluten-free and vegan, with ingredient cards making it allergy-friendly. Read more»

The MV Land Bank purchased 13 acres of Chappaquiddick farmland for $3M.
Nantucket has canceled its traditional 4th of July water fight between firefighters and residents due to drought conditions.
The Steamship Authority will conduct interviews for their new general manager in closed executive sessions despite transparency concerns.

🚨 Teens Charged in P-town
Two 19-year-olds and a minor have been charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly driving through Provincetown on July 1, using air horns and shouting homophobic slurs at pedestrians. Ryan Mahimtura of Framingham, Henry Ward and an unnamed minor from Hudson may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
This incident comes amid another active investigation into an assault that occurred in Provincetown the previous day, June 30. In response, police have increased their presence throughout the holiday week.
Town officials have scheduled a Community Safety Forum for July 8 at Town Hall, where the town manager and police chief will provide updates and hear community concerns during what is typically one of Provincetown's busiest tourist weeks. Read more»
