THE DIGEST

Dolphin disaster 🐬

Cape Cod experienced its largest dolphin stranding event in recent memory, with 125 dolphins beached near Wellfleet on June 28th. The extraordinary scale of the event left locals shocked and seeking answers. While an estimated 12 dolphins died, rescue efforts saved many others, though not without difficulty. The community is now calling for more proactive measures to prevent future tragedies, including better monitoring and diversion tactics. Experts suggest warmer ocean temperatures and the area's unique geography may have contributed to the event. As the investigation continues, residents hope this will spark greater awareness and support for wildlife rescue efforts in the region. Read the full story.

Cape Cod welcomes Cape Verdean PM 🤝

Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva got a whirlwind tour of Cape Cod's Cape Verdean history, from activist beaches to tear-jerking kitchen exhibits. His visit to the CC Cape Verdean Museum & Cultural Center was a celebration of shared heritage, complete with medal-giving and nostalgic nods to 'Nana's Kitchen'. The tour wrapped up with a brunch at the Falmouth Cape Verdean Club, where Independence Day reminders mixed with cultural pride. It seems that on Cape Cod, Cape Verdean roots run as deep as the Atlantic, and diplomacy is best served with a side of local cuisine. Read the full story.

The shark log is nearly full 🦈

Cape Cod isn't just for beach-goers anymore - it's become a hotspot for shark enthusiasts who prefer their summer thrills with a side of science. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy has been playing "Where's Waldo?" with great whites, identifying nearly 100 new sharks in 2023 alone. Their catalog now boasts over 700 finned celebrities, including LeeBeth, a 14-foot shark who decided to take a Mexican vacation, swimming further into the Gulf than any tracked white shark before.

But this isn't just for the pros - even landlubbers can join in on the fun by submitting sightings to the White Shark Logbook. So next time you're out on the water, keep your eyes peeled - you might just become Cape Cod's next citizen shark spotter. Read the full story.

The need for (internet) speed 🛜

Cape Cod's internet speeds are often slower than bridge traffic on July 4th weekend. Amanda Converse's shop in Hyannis is getting less than 20% of the download speed she's paying for, leading to a new initiative called "Fix Cape Internet."

OpenCape CEO Steven Johnston and Cape Cod Technology Council's Stephen Smith are rallying residents to take speed tests before July 20, hoping to catch the eye of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute and its $147 million in federal funding. Meanwhile, Comcast insists everything's fine, blaming slow speeds on old equipment.

With claims of monopolies and unreliable speed tests, the FCC's broadband map shows limited options for Cape Cod residents, with Xfinity as the primary cable provider and a few satellite services available. While Comcast points to recent investments in Massachusetts, local business owners and residents argue that more competition and infrastructure improvements are needed to address the Cape's internet issues. LOCAL BUSINESS

Solar powered liquor 😎 🍹

Truro Vineyards on Cape Cod is taking a “spirited” approach to sustainability by partnering with ReVision Energy to install over 160 solar panels on their distillery warehouse. This solar array will generate enough energy to keep their spirits in good spirits, maintaining optimal storage temperatures and offsetting energy use across the property. The vineyard's owner, David Roberts Jr., is mixing his drinks with a dash of environmental responsibility, proving that even booze can go green. The new system will generate over 61,000 kWh of energy annually, significantly reducing the vineyard's carbon footprint. This initiative reflects Truro Vineyards' commitment to sustainable practices in the wine and spirits industry. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

A fridge for the people 🍎

Harwich has launched "The People's Fridge" program, placing a refrigerator outside the community center to provide 24/7 access to free food for residents in need. The initiative hopes to reduce food waste while addressing increased child food insecurity, which rose 33% from 2019 to 2021. The fridge will be stocked daily with pre-packaged lunches and local surplus produce.

Complementing this effort is "The People's Garden," a new vegetable garden at the cultural center that will help supply the fridge. The program has received cash from various sources, including grants for equipment and fresh produce. Future plans include adding a freezer, expanding the garden, and incorporating educational programs on gardening.

Health Department Director Carrie Schoener emphasizes that while the program focuses on children, it's available to all residents in need. The initiative reflects a growing trend of community fridges on Cape Cod, addressing a strong need within the community. Read the full story.
