THE DIGEST

Seis & humpbacks & fins, oh my! 🐳

Researchers conducting an aerial survey off the coasts of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket spotted a posse of 161 whales from 7 different species, including a brilliant concentration of 93 endangered sei whales. Other sightings included 35 humpbacks, 21 fins, as well as minke, sperm, North Atlantic right whales, and even two killer whales - one seen eating a tuna. While large numbers of whales are common in our waters this time of year, researchers said catching such a diverse and dense group on a single flight was highly exceptional. Several of the species spotted remain endangered or protected. Read the full story.

Can’t get high without supply 💨

Martha's Vineyard is facing a potential marijuana shortage as its two dispensaries struggle to legally schlep cannabis from the mainland due to conflicting state and federal regulations around transport by sea. The lone dispensary supplier plans to end operations by September, leaving over 230 medical marijuana users and thousands of recreational tokers without access on the island. A pot shop owner has sued the state's Cannabis Control Commission, which acknowledges the urgency and is working to find a solution after commissioners visited the island last week. The issue highlights the complications legal marijuana businesses face when the feds still classify cannabis as an illegal substance. Read the full story.

Night manager saves the inn 🔥

Investigators have identified the likely point of origin for Tuesday's fire at the Dan'l Webster Inn and Spa in Sandwich as an exterior area near the back door, where evidence of smoking and an extension cord was found. While the exact cause remains a mystery, all 48 guests were safely evacuated with one person treated for smoke inhalation. The fire caused significant damage to the back wall, roof and kitchen area, forcing the inn to temporarily close until it can be cleaned and recertified by the Board of Health. An employee's quick actions raising the alarm and evacuating guests were praised. Read the full story.

Sandwich Fix & Flip: School to Housing 🏫

Construction will begin lickety-split to convert the former Henry T. Wing School in Sandwich into 128 age-restricted rental units, with 80% designated as affordable housing. This will increase Sandwich's affordable housing units to 5.8% of year-round housing. The $2.6 million project involves demolishing part of the school while preserving the 1927 original structure. It’s a partnership between the town, SCG Development Partners and CHOICE Inc., with the goal of providing much-needed affordable senior housing options for locals. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

Corrections Officer in Hot Water 👮‍♂️

Barnstable County Corrections Officer Gregory Djaoen pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting an inmate at Barnstable County Correctional Facility. The charges include assault, assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and witness intimidation based on alleged incidents on May 25-26. There are questions around Djaoen's phone being seized by state police and a previous road rage incident where he was accused of threatening another driver with a firearm, though those charges were dismissed. Barnstable County Sheriff Donna Buckley condemned the alleged violence and said Djaoen has been removed from the facility pending an ongoing investigation. Read the full story.

You gotta know when to hold em 🚔

Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois has implemented a policy of requesting dangerousness hearings to hold perps charged with fentanyl trafficking before trial, citing the drug's lethality and role in overdoses. This represents a shift, as data shows nearly a 100% increase in such hearings in Barnstable County recently. While some argue many low-level dealers are addicts themselves, Galibois says sellers are trafficking "poison." However, concerns remain around ensuring adequate treatment resources as fewer drug offenders are locked up. Read the full story.
