THE DIGEST

Independence from July 4th chaos 🎆

Dennis beaches are cracking down on Fourth of July shenanigans after years of partying that would make even the Founding Fathers blush. Town officials are banning daily parking passes and instituting a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol, drugs, and rowdiness at Mayflower, Chapin, and Bayview beaches. With emergency calls doubling since 2019 and last year's 4th of July leaving more trash than a seagull convention, police are beefing up patrols and promising $50 fines for boozy beachgoers. The message is clear: Dennis wants its sandy shores to be more "family picnic" and less "spring break gone wild.” Read the full story.

Leftovers to landscapes 🪴

Cape Cod is cooking up a plan to turn its leftovers into gold - or at least into rich, garden-friendly compost. A team of waste-savvy experts is eyeing the Joint Base CC as the perfect spot for this gourmet garbage transformation center, but first, they've secured $80,000 to make sure their plan is feasible. Bourne's already jumped on the bandwagon, collecting a whopping 8.5 tons of food waste in 2023. The ultimate goal? A Cape Cod peppered with composting facilities, ensuring yesterday's meals become tomorrow's gardens, and keeping local leftovers from taking an unnecessary mainland vacation. Read the full story.

Shark safety 101 🦈

Cape Cod's beaches are notorious for shark sightings, but don't worry, the lifeguards are on it like white on a great white's belly. With two shark attacks in recent years, including a fatal one, Wellfleet's beaches are now armed with a shark-spotting trifecta: eagle-eyed lifeguards, high-tech buoys, and a flag system that's more colorful than a beach umbrella sale. Swimmers are advised to avoid playing "guess the fin" at dawn or dusk, steer clear of seals, and remember that those smooth, dark patches of water are nature's way of saying "come on in, the water's fine!" So, while Cape Cod's beaches might be serving up some toothy tourists, with these precautions, you're more likely to lose your ice cream to a seagull than your leg to a shark. Read the full story.

Pilot safely beaches plane 🛩️

On Sunday afternoon, a small plane with a pilot and two passengers on a sightseeing tour had to make an emergency landing on a beach nearby Marconi Beach. The pilot reported having engine problems and couldn't make it back to the Chatham airport they took off from. The plane, a single-engine Cessna 172 owned by the tour company Stick'n Rudder Aero Tours, landed safely on the beach and no one was injured. Police, firefighters and national park rangers responded and ended up towing the undamaged plane about 1.5 miles to Nauset Light Beach to remove it from the beach area. Investigators will look into what caused the plane's engine issues that forced the emergency beach landing. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

Painting and healing in the slammer 🎨

Every morning, the 33 ladies in a special unit at the Barnstable County jail meet in groups to discuss parenting, recovery, and work on painting a huge mural called "Metamorphosis." The mural project is part of a new Women's Therapeutic Treatment Program created to help the incarcerated women express themselves artistically and manage trauma through conversation. The sheriff says engaging the women, who have 49 kids between them, can reduce repeat offenses and strengthen families. The mural painting has given the women a creative outlet to depict change and growth. Local organizations have partnered with the jail for the program, which hopes to remind the women that their difficult situation is temporary. Read the full story.
