THE DIGEST
AA “wings it” to Cape Cod 🛩️
On Wednesday afternoon an inaugural American Airlines flight from LaGuardia touched down at Cape Cod Gateway Airport, kicking off seasonal service through the summah. The 27 travelers were greeted with a water cannon salute and a ceremony attended by airport staff.
Airport manager Katie Servis emphasized the new service's importance, providing Cape residents with simpler travel options to New York and Washington, D.C. Two daily flights will connect Hyannis to LaGuardia and Reagan National.
The airport also hosts JetBlue's seasonal flights to JFK. Despite past scrutiny over a $22 million runway extension, the new routes enhance connectivity and hope to establish Cape Cod as a global destination. Read the full story.
Flamingo Frenzy 🦩
The Cape Cod birding community is giddy after a rare American flamingo was spotted at Chapin Beach in Dennis on Sunday. Confirmed by Mark Faherty from the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, this could be the first wild flamingo sighting in Massachusetts if verified.
The flamingo likely traveled from Long Island, where it was seen around the same time. Typically found in the Caribbean and the Florida Keys, these long legged birds sometimes appear far from their usual homes, especially after storms like Hurricane Idalia in 2023. Cape birders are eager to catch a glimpse of this rare visitor. According to Faherty, the sighting has created quite a buzz. Read the full story.
Homelessness on the Cape 🛏️
The Cape and Islands Regional Network on Homelessness has released the latest numbers from their Annual Point in Time (PIT) Count, conducted on January 23rd. This HUD-mandated count provides a snapshot of homelessness in the area.
Key Findings:
Total Homeless: 568 individuals, up by 141 from last year.
Emergency Assistance Shelters: Increased by 34 families and 125 individuals.
Unsheltered Individuals: Rose from 32 to 76, partly due to warmer weather on the night of the count.
Sheltered Individuals: Decreased from 120 to 97, since hotel access depends on colder temperatures (below 32°).
Joseph Pacheco, Barnstable County’s Human Services Director, emphasizes that the PIT Count is crucial for planning and resource allocation. It highlights trends and demographic data, helping to shape effective solutions. Read the full story.
