CAPE DIGEST

🚏 Community Mourns Loss of Visionary

Thomas Cahir, the 72-year-old administrator of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority who "completely transformed" public transportation on the Cape during his 16-year tenure, died Wednesday morning. Among his key innovations at the CCRTA was creating the seasonal CapeFLYER train service.

Colleagues and friends, including Barnstable County Clerk Susan Moran and State Representative David Vieira, remembered him as a mentor, gentleman, and transportation champion whose dedication to improving life for Cape residents left an "indelible mark" on the community. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at St. Patrick's Church in Falmouth. Read the full story.

🐳 3 Generations of Whales Swimming in Bay

A mama North Atlantic right whale named Nauset and her new baby were spotted Wednesday in Cape Cod Bay, marking the first right whale calf sighting in Massachusetts waters this season. 31-year-old Nauset, who was first seen with this newborn off Georgia in December, has now had five calves - with her 2013 calf Monomoy also spotted in the bay during the same survey.

This sighting brings hope for the critically endangered species, which numbers just 372 individuals. Cape Cod Bay hosts one of the largest feeding groups of right whales each winter and spring, with researchers already observing over 80 individual whales there this season. Suits remind boaters that Massachusetts requires vessels to travel no faster than 10 knots in coastal waters during whale season. Read the full story.

🎒 No Kid Goes Hungry on Weekends

Cape Kid Meals, started in 2014 by Pastor David Johnson after learning about hungry kiddos in local schools, has grown from serving 2 schools to 33—now reaching 70% of all public Cape Cod schools. Executive Director Tammy Leone oversees the program where volunteers pack bags of shelf-stable food that teachers discreetly slip into students' backpacks on Fridays to ensure they have food over the weekend.

The organization, which gets 40% of its supplies from the Greater Boston Food Bank and the rest through retail purchases funded by donations, has seen a 25% increase in need since the pandemic began. Unlike many assistance programs, Cape Kid Meals requires no application process—teachers simply identify students who might need weekend food help, reflecting Barnstable County's status as having one of Massachusetts' highest child food insecurity rates. 🚣 Trading Screens for Saws

The Cape Cod Maritime Museum's boat building program gives middle schoolers a chance to spend 10-12 weeks crafting wooden Bevin's Skiffs. Since the program began in 2012, many schools have participated, with students paying $150 each to join these hands-on sessions where they work with adult advisors in an "easy-going and unhurried" atmosphere.

The program offers kids a break from screens and provides the satisfaction of creating something real with their hands, culminating in a launch day when they can row across the harbor in boats they built themselves. Beyond boat building, the museum runs other youth programs, including a one-week Young Mariner Program covering maritime history and seamanship. Read the full story.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🍽️ Kate's Seafood Gets New Owners

The Crisantis recently purchased Kate's Fried Seafood and Ice Cream in Brewster after its 39-year run under Kathy and John Ohman, and plan to rename it The Cape House while preserving its beloved menu—yes, including the famous onion rings. At Monday's select board meeting, the couple received unanimous approval for a seasonal liquor license that would allow them to serve booze daily from noon to 8 PM between April and December.

Both professional chefs, the Crisantis aim to honor Kate's legacy while adding their own culinary variations, telling the board they're "really respectful of all the history, but we also want to build on it and bring more to the Cape." Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

🚔 Surveillance Nets Drugs and Guns

Two traffic stops outside a Central Avenue home in Falmouth led to separate drug arrests this week, with police seizing cocaine, fentanyl, and illicit pills. Following these arrests, Falmouth Police executed a search warrant at the residence with help from the regional SWAT Team and Sheriff's Office, where they discovered two illegal firearms including a stolen Walther handgun.

The first arrest involved Dennis resident Benjamin Morris for possession of a Class B substance, while Falmouth resident Heidi Debarros faces more serious charges of trafficking cocaine and fentanyl, resulting in her being held on $5,000 bail. Read the full story.
