CAPE DIGEST
🏡 A Place to Heal
A Falmouth family who lost their 9-year-old son, William is working to establish "The Green House," a free vacation home where grieving families who have lost a child or parent can escape and create new memories. Susan and Nicholas Shaw have founded the nonprofit William's Be Yourself Challenge with the goal of raising $2M to purchase and renovate a home.
Since launching their fundraising campaign in December, they've raised just over $203K of their $2M target, which would cover the home purchase, renovations and establish a maintenance trust. The Shaws, who found that travel helped in their own grief journey, hope to make this opportunity available to families who otherwise couldn't afford such an escape. Read the full story.
🍿 Mall Movies Return
Bill Hanney's Entertainment Cinemas is reopening eight of the twelve movie theaters at Cape Cod Mall today, just weeks after taking over the lease from Regal Cinemas which closed February 1st. While the picture and sound systems remain excellent from Regal's previous renovation, Hanney plans to upgrade the seating to luxury recliners one theater at a time through May.
Current ticket prices range from $14.75 for adults to $6.75 on Tuesdays, with movies like Oscar winner "Anora" now showing. This reopening is just phase one of Hanney's ambitious plan—by spring 2026, he aims to transform the complex into "Bill Hanney's Entertainment Experience" featuring an 800-seat live theater with IMAX capabilities, a cabaret club, and a comedy venue. 🏒 Nauset Hockey Wins First State Title
In a edge of your seat comeback victory, the Nauset Regional High School boys hockey team captured their first-ever state championship by defeating Medfield 4-1 in the Division 3 finals on Sunday. After falling behind 1-0 in the second period, the Warriors stormed back with four unanswered goals in the final period, starting with Logan Poulin's game-tying goal that marked Nauset's first-ever score in a state final. Jake Eldredge gave Nauset the lead with under seven minutes remaining, followed by empty-net goals from Colin Ward and Poulin to seal the victory.
The win fulfilled the team's season-long mission after losing in the championship game last year, with senior captain Poulin having boldly shot calling that they would return "with a different outcome." Nauset finished their historic season with a near-perfect 23-0-1 record, backed by a stingy defense that allowed just two goals across five playoff games and goalkeeper Zach Coelho, who made several game-saving stops in the decisive third period. 🥔 Ancient Practice Fights Modern Hunger
Island Grown Initiative on Martha's Vineyard has revived the ancient practice of gleaning—harvesting excess produce from farms that would otherwise go to waste. The volunteer program collected 60,000 pounds of food last year for neighbors in need. This effort has become increasingly important as food insecurity rises—IGI's Island Food Pantry now serves approximately one in four year-round residents.
The program creates a win-win: it prevents food waste when farmers have excess crops they can't harvest due to labor shortages or market timing, while providing fresh grub to folks struggling to make ends meet. As federal funding for local food programs gets cut, this biblical practice offers a hyper-local solution that ensures good food doesn't go to waste while feeding the hungry. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS
⚖️ Manslaughter Indictments Follow Tragedy
Shannon Hubbard, a Chatham Elementary School teacher, and her one-year-old daughter Maggie June perished in an October fire at an Airbnb vacation rental in Clinton, NY, where investigators found no smoke detectors despite the listing claiming they were present.
On Wednesday, property owners Dennis and Meredith Darcy were indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges, with prosecutors alleging they "deliberately ignored the significant and unjustifiable risk of death" by failing to comply with fire safety codes and operating without required permits. The tragedy has spurred the Hubbard family to support new legislation in Massachusetts - tentatively named the Maggie Hubbard Rental Safety Act - that would require safety standards for vacation rentals.
