THE DIGEST
The alarm that cried wolf 🚨
Cape Tech had more excitement this week with yet another armed intruder alert triggering a frenzied evacuation. Despite the chaos, Superintendent Bob Sanborn doesn't suspect any student mischief. The cause of the alarm? Still a head-scratcher. Deputy Police Chief Kevin Considine emphasized the importance of swift action in these situations. While concerns about desensitization floated around, Considine reassured that students were visibly shaken and responsive. The quick response from law enforcement and a thorough building sweep hammered home the gravity of the situation. All eyes are now on fixing the glitch. Read the full story.
Whose tank is it anyway? 🥶
Bob Angelini faces a chilly situation with his newly purchased Sandwich home as he runs out of propane for heating and cooking. This is due to a squabble over ownership of the tank. The trouble began when he received a letter from Dunlap's Propane, claiming ownership of the tank and exclusive propane purchase rights. Dunlap's actions escalated, leading to a lock on the tank installed without notice. While Angelini awaits his day in Small Claims Court, real estate pros stress the importance of clarifying such agreements during the home buying process to avoid similar icy situations. Crabs to spawn in peace 🦀
As spring arrives on Cape Cod, ancient horseshoe crabs emerge from the ocean depths to spawn near the sandy shores. This year, Massachusetts will enforce a ban on collecting them during breeding season, marking a major change. Historically, the state has had lax protections compared to others with biomedical fisheries. The decision, backed by a fishing industry commission, awaits final approval from the governor. Horseshoe crab blood is vital for vaccine testing due to its ability to clot around harmful bacteria, though synthetic alternatives are in development. Read the full story.

Fisherman can reel in cash 🎣
Vineyard Wind is offering to help fishermen affected by its offshore wind farm near Martha’s Vineyard. Fisherman have 90 days to apply for a slice of the $19.1M Fisheries Compensatory Mitigation Program. This cash pot will be divvied up among fishermen in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, impacted by the offshore development. Beth Casoni, head of the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association, thinks it's a solid move, especially because Vineyard Wind started engaging with fishermen from the get-go. Anglers who can prove they've been using the area between 2016 and 2022, will get annual payments for five years. Applications close on June 3, 2024. Vineyard Wind will be answering questions at various events, including the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association’s annual weekend and industry trade show. Read the full story.

Townies making bank 💰
Cape town managers and admins are cashing in big bucks, often earning more than members of Congress and the average U.S. governor. For example, over in Chatham and Brewster, top earners rake in over $200K in salaries and bennies. On average, these town execs pull in a hefty $192,208 annually, surpassing the pay of U.S. Senators and Representatives. Even the median salary of a U.S. state governor falls short at $150K. With the high cost of living and real estate in the area, these hefty salaries serve as a lure for top talent. Sandwich leads the pack with a town manager pulling in $232,852, while Harwich trails at $164,252. But it's not just town managers cashing in—cops in Chatham and other town staff are also breaking the six-figure ceiling, mainly due to overtime pay. Read the full story.
