☀️ One Fish Left on the Bucket List

Plus: Wicked Wine Club launches in Wellfleet

Presented by:

Good morning Cape Cod. Today is International Whiskey Day, which seems perfectly timed for the end of March when we all deserve a drink after surviving winter, spring that doesn't feel like spring, and whatever else 2026 has thrown at us so far.

In this week’s Cape Coddah:

  • Army Corps drafting new canal plan

  • Will Truro get 14K solar panels?

  • Events and live music

    Let’s get to it.

⚓️ After 17 Years, Boathouse Comes Home

After 17 years away, Chatham's historic Coast Guard boathouse returned Wednesday and was placed on its new foundation at 90 Bridge Street, where it will house the town's shellfish hatchery, though preservationist David Doherty watched from vacation in South Carolina.

The boathouse stood at Stage Harbor for over 70 years and housed the motor lifeboat CG36500, which rescued 32 men from the wrecked tanker Pendleton on February 18, 1952, in one of the Coast Guard's greatest small boat rescues.

Slated for demolition, the building was moved to Quincy in 2009, then Hull in 2019 for a museum that fell through. The Chatham Select Board accepted the donation in 2021, with $730,620 in state grants funding the upweller equipment to grow tiny shellfish seeds before planting them in open water. Read more»

📄 Army Corps Revising 1975 Canal Plan

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is updating its Cape Cod Canal master plan for the first time in over 50 years, with the current 123-page plan approved in 1975 guiding management of the canal and more than 1,000 acres of surrounding land.

Park manager Jonathan Dumais said recreational areas and leased properties—including Bourne Scenic Park campground, Gallo ice rink, Sandwich Marina, and Scusset Beach State Reservation, will likely remain unchanged. The plan needs updating to comply with 2013 Army Corps guidance on land use classifications.

A draft revised plan should be ready for public comment by March 2027. The initial public comment period ends Saturday, March 28, with comments accepted at 508-759-4431 or [email protected]. The Bourne and Sagamore Bridges replacement project is outside the plan's scope. Read more»

🎣 One Fish Left on His Bucket List

The Mashpee community is rallying to fund a bucket-list tarpon fishing trip for Chris McDonald, diagnosed with glioblastoma, after learning in December that a new brain tumor appeared with no viable treatment options.

The Help Fill Chris's Bucket fundraiser Sunday at Warren's Harborview in Wareham has drawn over 200 ticket buyers and more than 60 raffle items donated by Upper Cape businesses, including a "Night Out in Mashpee" package, biplane ride, skydiving opportunity, and fishing gear.

Chris, his wife Jen, and oldest son Galen work at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School. World-record-holding angler Patrick Sebile will guide the family on a two-day fishing trip this April during school vacation.

"We're not giving up on this life, or catching the silver king!" Jen McDonald wrote.

☀️ 14,000 Solar Panels Planned for Truro

Boston-based NextGrid plans to buy 39 acres of the Noons property in North Truro to build a 7.7-megawatt solar farm with about 14,000 panels by the end of 2027, making it among the largest solar farms on the Cape.

The company has been talking with owner Linda Noons-Rose since 2019 and intends to buy a 17-acre parcel at 9 Noons Drive and nearly 22 acres at 2 Sand Pit Road, with the sale finalizing once permits are issued.

Local residents could subscribe through a community solar program for discounts on energy bills. The project needs approval from the Cape Cod Commission and Truro's planning board.

Abutters at March community meetings seemed comfortable with the plan. NextGrid will remove PFAS contamination from the site and build a sound wall around the farm during construction. Read more»

Magnet fisher Nate DeMontigny of the YouTube channel Cape Cod Magnet Crew pulled a pristine derringer pistol still sealed inside a case from a Bridgewater river.

Tessa, an 11-year-old yellow lab, was rescued uninjured after falling into a 12-foot-deep, two-foot-wide sinkhole in her Falmouth backyard on Jones Road.

Brandon Flynn, Elizabeth Perkins, T.R. Knight, and Ryan Powers will star in Deluxe Ocean View, a psychological horror film, set on the icy shores of Cape Cod at an empty luxury resort called Notre Joie.

Elizabeth Banks told Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday that during a Cape Cod vacation, she used whales to explain the facts of life to her sons after one asked a technical question about sex.

🍷 Wicked Wine Club Launches in Wellfleet

The Wicked Wine Club, launched this month as an extension of The Wicked Oyster restaurant and Wicked Provisions shop in Wellfleet, offers Cape Cod wine lovers access to small-batch wines led by sommelier Sebastien Taffara and wine specialist Rosa Simpson.

Standard membership costs $65 for two bottles monthly or $95 for three bottles with tasting notes, 10% discount at Wicked Provisions, and first access to wine tastings and dinners. Members can add a $30 Pantry Bundle with cheeses, crackers, tinned fish, and olives.

The club's first offering included six bottles of rare pinot meunier from Oregon's The Eyrie Vineyards—which produces only 250 of 10,000 cases annually—as a $50 add-on. Members pick up bottles at Wicked Provisions, 50 Main Street, and can sign up via Table 22. Read more»

Fat Ronnie's Burger Bar, a Martha's Vineyard institution, opened its second location at 303 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan.

The Nantucket Fire Department battled a structure fire at 3 Shady Lane on Wednesday night after receiving a 911 call from a passerby reporting the unoccupied, shuttered-for-winter house was on fire.

Aquinnah Cliffs shop owners told the select board that public bathrooms closed since October are threatening their ability to open in April as scheduled with pathway work not finishing until April 30.

The Old South Diner in Nantucket sold its fifth million-dollar lottery ticket in two years on Wednesday, a $2M Powerball winner, just weeks after island resident Yancy Contreras Menjivar won $2M.

⚖️ Sandwich Man Charged with Killing Sister

Kenneth Beltrame, 67, was charged with murder after police found his sister Jennifer Beltrame, 61, dead with "obvious signs of violent trauma" in her upstairs apartment at their Freeman Avenue home in Sandwich on March 24.

Police responded to a well-being check requested by a friend after Jennifer, who was recovering from cancer treatments, missed a daily conversation. Kenneth met officers outside and told them his sister was inside and dead.

His defense attorney Drew Segadelli said both siblings had "significant injuries, but more from fighting-type injuries" with no weapons involved, and that the siblings had financial issues though no clear motive was expressed. Kenneth was arraigned March 25 and held without bail pending mental health evaluation, with no family members attending the hearing. Read more»
