THE DIGEST

Kennedy memorabilia up for auction 📝

A fascinating piece of Kennedy family history is hitting the auction block - a 1957 mortgage note showing JFK borrowed $50,000 from his wealthy pops; Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. to purchase the famous Hyannisport "Summer White House." The note, signed by JFK outlines his promise to repay the loan within 5 years for the 9-bedroom, 6.5-bath home that would become a political hub during his presidency.

Interestingly, a handwritten note indicates JFK paid it off just 9 months later, providing a glimpse into the family dynamics. The auction house says the document's tie to the iconic Kennedy compound makes it extraordinarily rare and insightful. Up for grabs with a $4,000 estimate, it offers collectors a personal connection to American royalty.

The note is part of a special JFK birthday auction also featuring other Kennedy artifacts and memorabilia. For fans, it represents a chance to own a prized piece of Camelot history linked to the home where JFK found solace and made weighty decisions that shaped the nation. Read the full story.

Bringing sand to the beach 🏖️

Sand has turned into liquid gold on Cape Cod as rising seas and monster storms eat away at beaches. In Falmouth, a dredging project sucked up silt from the brackish Great Pond and pumped a sandy slurry onto shore to rebuild the eroding coastline. It's become a familiar sight across the Cape and Islands - towns scrambling to mine every last grain to fortify their vanishing beaches. Who knew replenishing these sandy oases would become such a high-stakes game of beach tug-of-war against Mother Nature?

From sourcing offshore sand to trucking it in from inland pits, Cape communities are going to great lengths (and expense) to keep our beloved stretches of paradise from disappearing. But each fresh dumping of sand is likely a temporary fix until the next Nor'easter washes it all away. Read the full story.

State dollars for the Cape 🐟

The Massachusetts House high-fived on a budget delivering $935,000 in state funding to the Cape and Islands. Rep. Dylan Fernandes secured $700,000 to support local fishermen's sustainable practices and shellfish propagation, as well as cash for the Upper Cape YMCA ($60,000), Marine Biological Laboratory's research ($100,000), and the Cape Cod Chamber for workforce development ($75,000). The budget highlights investments in the region's economic drivers like fishing, research/education, and recreation activities. It now heads to the state Senate for possible approval by late May. Shell yeah! 🦪

The Massachusetts Oyster Project is continuing their environmentally-friendly mission on Cape Cod - rescuing discarded oyster shells from landfills and repurposing them to create new real estate for oyster populations.

The nonprofit works with local restaurants, providing buckets for employees to toss shucked shells instead of the trash. Customers can also bring their own shells to participating spots. Volunteers then collect the shells, which towns carefully quarantine for a year before strategically placing them in shallow waters.

With success in places like Wellfleet, the project is expanding its reach, recently partnering with Yarmouth to support oyster restoration in the Bass River. With growing interest from restaurants closer to Boston, these shell-saviors show no signs of slowing their sustainable seafood efforts. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

Son stabs dad in Centerville 🚔

A disturbing scene erupted in Centerville on Tuesday when 24-year-old Ygor Barboza allegedly stabbed his 62-year-old father repeatedly before being arrested by police. Charged with armed assault among other counts, Barboza's attorney cited his mental health struggles and lack of access to care on Cape Cod. The judge ordered a 20-day evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital for Barboza after his arraignment on the violent attack that sent his father to the hospital. Read the full story.

Gerardi pleads not guilty to rape 🚨

A Wellfleet man is facing some heavy allegations from two decades ago. Mario Gerardi pleaded not guilty to 19 counts of raping a child he employed at 14 years old at a Yarmouth restaurant. Prosecutors pushed for $20K bail, describing months of escalating abuse at work, home, and public locations, but the judge released Gerardi due to his clean record - ordering no contact with the alleged victim as they await a June pretrial hearing. Gerardi's lawyer maintains his client's innocence in this complex case from the past. Read the full story.
