☀️ P-town Busker Back in the Harbor

Plus: Sandwich's new trail opens today

Presented by:

Good morning Cape Cod. Today is Mount Everest Day, marking May 29, 1953, when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to reach the summit of Earth's highest peak. Out here on the Cape, our highest point is about 300 feet (shoutout to Pine Hill in Bourne), so let's just say we're built different. 🏔️

In this week’s Cape Coddah:

  • Inside a local trout hatchery

  • What happened at Terry’s?

  • Events and live music

    Let’s get to it.

📋 Daffy Weekend Gets a Closer Look

Nantucket's Daffodil Festival is more popular than ever. Attendance jumped 26% over last year and 82% over 2024, which has town officials thinking about how to manage the growth.

Nantucket's Culture & Tourism director flagged what she called "significant public safety risks" including massive crowds, trash piling up, open container drinking, food safety issues from picnickers sharing snacks without permits, and even DPW workers reporting vehicles backing through pedestrian crowds in Sconset.

The Select Board was divided. Some members raved about the weekend, calling it a huge economic boost. Others questioned whether the festival has drifted from its community roots, with one board member taking issue with paying for prime parade placement. There's also debate over whether the event should be held during school vacation week. The Chamber of Commerce says it's open to working with the town on solutions. Read more»

🚲 Sandwich's New Trail Opens Today

Good news for you cyclists and walkers. Sandwich's new four-mile Service Road Trail officially opens today, after two years of planning and construction. The path stretches from Chase Road west almost to Route 130, with a 36-space parking lot at the midpoint on Round Hill Road.

It's also a key step toward connecting Sandwich Village to the Cape Cod Canal bike path. Town officials say the trail creates a major east-west corridor that intersects with the existing north-south path, giving locals a safer and more accessible network for biking, walking, and running. And the work isn't done yet.

The town is already designing additional pathways that will run parallel to Route 6, link up to the Sandwich Hollows Golf Course and Maple Swamp trails, and eventually reach the canal. Read more»

☀️ Get In Loser, We're Going to the Cape.

Pack a bag. Grab your sunglasses. Text the group chat. The Cape is calling and you're not about to say no.

This soft, easy-wearing tee is the perfect mix of Cape Cod love and Mean Girls energy and honestly, what better combo for a summer weekend road trip? Throw it on for the drive over the bridge, beach days with the crew, or any moment that calls for committing to the bit.

Pairs perfectly with denim shorts, a beach bag, and a complete disregard for whatever you were supposed to be doing this weekend.

🎸 The Busker's Back in the Harbor

A well-known Provincetown busker is back in the harbor for another summer, but only after years of friction with the town's harbormasters. Damon Gorham, a guitar and flute player who's been performing in town since 2012, lived illegally aboard his sailboat through four Provincetown winters.

The boat had become a safety hazard, with a broken engine, unsafe rigging, and a propane heater that could explode at any spark. After missing a fall deadline, Gorham spent the winter in Dennis and just returned in May, after meeting three conditions: a seaworthy boat, an approved mooring, and proof of fees and insurance.

He still owes the town over $17,000 in unpaid services. More than 20 people showed up at a recent meeting to support him, calling him a beloved part of the community.

🐟 Inside the Sandwich Trout Hatchery

For over 100 years, the state hatchery in Sandwich has been raising trout and stocking ponds across the Cape and Islands. Brook trout used to be native to local waters. The Monument River, now the Cape Cod Canal, was once a top fishing destination.

But pollution, dams, and cranberry bog development wiped them out, and today brook trout live in only about 5% of their historic habitat. The Sandwich Hatchery, one of the oldest in the country, raises trout in spring-fed pools that stay between 32 and 60 degrees year-round.

Each year, they release about 50,000 pounds of fish into local waters. Some get loaded onto trucks and ferried over to Martha's Vineyard. Most weigh about a pound, but a few tip the scales at over ten. Read more»

Lawmakers and transportation buffs are pushing a proposal to extend Commuter Rail service from Middleboro to Bourne, with riders then taking buses across the bridge, to help ease the 5M annual trips crossing onto Cape Cod.

A 120-year-old crumbling cottage in Hyannis Port was given a second life when architect Jill Neubauer and Clodagh Design lifted it onto a new foundation, moved it 5 feet east, and reimagined the interior.

Sundae School Homemade Ice Cream is celebrating 50 years with 76-cent small cones and cups on Sunday, June 14 from 2-4 PM at both their Harwich Port and Dennisport locations.

📺 What Really Happened at Terry's TV?

A widely shared Reddit post is exposing the alleged real story behind Terry's TV & Appliances in Harwich, which permanently closed on May 15. The voicemail claims the closure was for "medical reasons," but the post lays out a different picture.

The post suggests that according to court records and accounts from customers and employees, the business was buried under judgments from creditors, trucks were nearly repossessed, and the owner kept taking deposits for appliances he couldn't deliver. Many customers, including elderly residents and young families, are still waiting on refunds for thousands of dollars in unfilled orders. Employees say their final paychecks bounced.

Commenters shared their own stories, including one woman who only got her refund after threatening to contact the Attorney General. Read more»

The Martha's Vineyard Museum is returning three Hawaiian artifacts, a wooden canoe, a grass skirt with tapa cloth, and a poi pounder acquired during the whaling era, to a native Hawaiian organization in its first-ever repatriation.

Cisco Brewers is shooting down rumors that it's taking over Nantucket's beloved Tavern & Gazebo from longtime operator Luke Tedeschi, calling the speculation false and wishing his team the best in lease negotiations.

Martha's Vineyard heads to the polls Tuesday, June 2 to vote on a $333.5M high school building project, the most expensive ever proposed on the island, with up to $75M in state reimbursement and the future of the aging school facility on the line.

Nantucket Public Schools is in a "crisis" over a school bus driver shortage with just three weeks of classes left, leaving one driver to do double runs, the Madaket route canceled, and some students getting home over an hour late.
