THE DIGEST

Sandwich Boardwalk a “wrap”

The Sandwich Boardwalk has reopened after months of reconstruction following damage from a banger of a nor'easter in January 2022. Originally built in 1875, the boardwalk had already been slated for repairs funded by an $8M town meeting-approved capital debt exclusion and a $2.6M infrastructure bond. Crews grinded through the winter to rebuild it, and it reopened last weekend, now meeting storm surge standards and featuring a new diving platform. Some closures may occur as final touches are completed, with a celebration planned once the project is fully finished. Read the full story.

Too Florida-ish for the Cape? 🦜

This summer, the new Margaritaville Resort Cape Cod opens in Hyannis, marking the brand’s first New England location. However, not everyone is ironing their cruise wear. For 47 years, locals knew this location as the family-owned Cape Codder Resort & Spa. The recent sale to Linchris Hotel Corporation marked a big change for the community. The new Margaritaville features a tropical theme with design elements like a mammoth blue flip-flop statue, which some feel clash with Cape Cod's traditional vibes. Despite concerns, Margaritaville hopes to blend its brand with the local atmosphere. While some locals are skeptical, others look forward to the fun, care-free atmosphere it promises. Serial stabbing suspect locked up 🚔

Jared Ravizza, a 26-year-old from Martha's Vineyard, is being held without bail after an alleged stabbing spree across Massachusetts' South Shore. Ravizza is also connected to a Connecticut homicide. Appearing in court barefoot, he was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital after showing signs of delusions and hearing voices. Ravizza faces multiple charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder for stabbing two McDonald’s employees in Plymouth and four girls in a Braintree movie theater. Ravizza was captured following a police chase and crash in Sandwich. Read the full story.

Bringing power under the beach 🔌

Tom Cambareri has been measuring electromagnetic field (EMF) levels at Covell Beach, where Vineyard Wind 1’s power transmission cables are buried. Driven by safety concerns, Cambareri's efforts led to the town of Barnstable putting up signs to inform beachgoers about the juice beneath the sand. The town rejected Avangrid's proposed sign content for being too promotional and chose to handle the signage themselves.

Formal EMF monitoring is planned, with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and Energy Facilities Siting Board involved. Baseline readings showed EMF levels well below safety limits. Future readings, including those with active turbines, will be made public. The town will also have a third-party expert verify the data. Read the full story.

CIVIL NEWS

State Rep still owes $5K 💰

State Rep. Christopher Flanagan, D-Dennis, is under scrutiny for a still unpaid $5,139 invoice related to a controversial 2022 campaign mailer. The mailer, sent to Dennis voters before the election, falsely claimed to be from a group called Conservatives for Dennis endorsing Flanagan. After an investigation by the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance, it was revealed that the group and its supposed leader, Jeanne Louise, were cooked up by Flanagan. The investigation also uncovered campaign finance errors, leading to fines and penalties totaling $39,572. Currently, Flanagan's campaign has only $1,104.97 in cash. Despite all this, Flanagan is running unopposed for a second term. Read the full story.
