Plus: The best burger on Main Street
Presented by:
Good morning Cape Cod. To the moms in this community: Happy Mother's Day weekend. Whether you're juggling toddlers, teenagers, or adult kids who still call asking how to do laundry, you're doing an incredible job. Hope Sunday is a wonderful day. 💐
In this week’s Cape Coddah:
Midnight meeting in Brewster
FBI nabs a bank robber
Events and live music
Let’s get to it.

🚧 That Loud Banging Near the Sagamore?
If you've heard loud banging near the Sagamore Bridge lately, that's progress. MassDOT started driving steel piles into the ground on May 1 to figure out how deep the new bridge's foundation needs to go.
A contractor is hammering 50-foot steel piles at four sites around the canal, counting blows per foot to measure soil resistance, then welding on more sections to push deeper. Preliminary analysis says foundations will need to reach 75 to 100 feet. The $5.5M testing program is all about reducing risk for contractors who'll eventually bid on the massive replacement project.
The new Sagamore is funded by $1.2B federal, $700M state, and $350M from the Army Corps. Both bridges are being designed at the same time, but federal funding for the Bourne replacement is still up in the air. Read more»
🗳️ Brewster's Meeting Runs Past Midnight
Brewster's town meeting ran until 12:30AM and the biggest decision of the night wasn't even close. Voters overwhelmingly approved two articles permanently designating 10 acres of the Sea Camps Pond property for conservation, effectively killing any plans for affordable housing or wastewater treatment on the site.
Supporters argued the land sits in a drinking water protection zone and was purchased for open space. One housing advocate even agreed, pointing to the 41-acre police station parcel as a better option.
The meeting also approved $1.98M in overrides for schools and the town budget, passed a short-term rental registration bylaw, adopted the seasonal community designation, and indefinitely postponed a stricter leash law after an hour of dog stories. The overrides still need to pass at the ballot on May 19. Read more»

🦈 The Incredibly Honest Cape Cod Shirt
Look, the Cape's got a lot going for it, world-class beaches, incredible sunsets, the best clam chowder you'll ever eat. There's also... the sharks. Might as well lean into it.
This tee is for anyone with a sense of humor about the Cape's most famous summer residents. Soft, cotton, and guaranteed to start conversations everywhere from the beach parking lot to the ice cream shop. Perfect for locals who've heard every shark joke twice and visitors who want a souvenir with a little personality.
Because if you're going to live here (or visit), you might as well laugh about it. 🙂
📦 The Real People Moving to Lawrence Hill
Tenants are moving into Wellfleet's new Lawrence Hill affordable housing complex, and despite online rumors, most of them are local. Of the 34 households approved so far, 27 are from Cape Cod, including 11 already living in Wellfleet.
The first residents tell stories you hear all over the Outer Cape. A DPW groundskeeper who makes $65,000 and couldn't find anything under $4,000 a month. A woman who's been shuffling between seasonal rentals for five years, moving to New Hampshire every summer when the owners need their cottage back. An 82-year-old who sold her house after the 2008 recession and spent years borrowing beds from friends just to stay near her community.
Twenty-four of the 46 apartments are now occupied, with 23 children among the approved households. For many, it's their first stable home in years. Read more»

🎬 A Horror Movie Just Filmed in D-Port
A psychological horror movie was just filmed entirely on Cape Cod, and locals will probably recognize every inch of it. "Deluxe Ocean View" shot for about a month at the Pelham House Resort in Dennis Port, along with locations in Harwich, West Dennis, and even the unused wings of the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
The cast includes Camryn Manheim, Henry Ian Cusick from "Lost," and Ray Campbell from "Breaking Bad." The film follows a journalist who checks into a nearly vacant luxury resort for a career-saving interview and things go very wrong.
Producer Ryan Powers grew up summering in Dennis Port and actually worked at Pelham House as a kid. He wrote the screenplay specifically for the property, down to exact room numbers and side streets. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2027. Read more»

WATCH: The first trailer for "Tony," an A24 biopic about a young Anthony Bourdain's formative summer working in a Provincetown kitchen, stars Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas and hits theaters this August.
A small plane flipped while landing at Cape Cod Gateway Airport Thursday afternoon, but the pilot walked away with only minor injuries and the airport reopened within 45 minutes.
Orleans' long-blighted Underground Mall site is finally becoming something, with 29 condo units and new commercial space under construction at the renamed Orleans Plaza, about 14 months from welcoming its first residents.

🍔 The Best Burger on Main Street Turns 10
KKatie's Burger Bar in Hyannis is turning 10 this July, and if you haven't been, you're missing out. With 19 burgers on the menu, everything is hand-pressed and nothing is frozen. Not the beef, not the veggies, not even the pineapple on the Hawaiian Burger.
The most popular order is the bacon cheeseburger, but the adventurous can go for The Rock, a $23.99 tower of four quarter-pound patties stacked with onion rings and special sauce. There's also a "hell" sauce if you're feeling brave. Cape Cod Life just gave them the 2025 best burger award.
They've got four locations now, but the Hyannis spot on Main Street is the one to hit this summer, especially once the patio opens up. Read more»

A new Peacock miniseries starring Jennifer Garner, based on an Elin Hilderbrand novel and filmed on Nantucket last fall with over 500 local extras, premieres July 9.
MV Community Services named windsurfing legend and Vineyard Haven resident Nevin Sayre as this year's Art Buchwald Award recipient for his decades of fundraising, including solo 55-mile wing foil circumnavigations of the Island.
Nantucket Town Meeting narrowly blocked the expansion of the controversial geotube erosion control project along the Sconset Bluff, despite $9M in contingency funds and no cost to taxpayers.
Tisbury voters are asking what the town plans to do about vacant storefronts on Main Street in Vineyard Haven, including Hall family properties like the Capawock Theatre and the former Bunch of Grapes space, with eminent domain on the table.

🚨 FBI Traces Bank Robbery to Falmouth Man
A Falmouth man has been charged with two Boston bank robberies after the FBI tracked him down through surveillance footage, text messages, and a borrowed Toyota Rav4.
Steven Harris allegedly hit a Santander Bank in Roxbury and a TD Bank in Roslindale within an hour on April 28, with one robber brandishing a gun in both incidents. They left the first bank empty-handed when customers walked in but got about $3,000 from the second.
Investigators traced the getaway vehicle to a woman who'd lent it to someone she met through a Quincy probation program. Text records and gas station footage tied Harris to the car and the clothes worn during the robberies. He was arrested Sunday outside a sober home in Weymouth. The second suspect hasn't been identified yet. Read more»
