    Let’s get to it.

CAPE DIGEST

🚧 Wider, higher & better

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation hosted an open house Monday at the Bourne Veterans Memorial Center to share initial designs for the Cape Cod bridge replacements. Plans show the Sagamore Bridge will be replaced by two 54-foot-wide spans west of the current bridge, each with three lanes including a dedicated exit lane, and one span will include a pedestrian/bike path.

The new bridges will be built 3.3 feet higher to accommodate sea level rise, with piers on the canal's edge rather than in the water. The project will impact twelve businesses and homes near the bridge, including a strip mall near Market Basket, though property owners haven't yet been notified. Construction could begin in 2028 after environmental permits are secured, with the Sagamore Bridge replacement proceeding first since funding is already in the bag. Read the full story.

🚑 Crash sends five Cape teens to hospital

Five teenagers were hospitalized after a high-speed crash in Harwich Monday night when their car veered off Queen Anne Road, crashed through a guardrail, and caught fire. Police officers, who had spotted the car accelerating from 60 to over 80 mph moments before the crash, rescued one girl trapped in the burning vehicle and applied a tourniquet to her leg.

Two 17-year-old girls were airlifted to Mass General Hospital with serious injuries including broken bones, while three 18-year-old males were taken to Cape Cod Hospital. The 18-year-old driver from Brewster faces charges, though police note that while speed was a factor, alcohol was not involved. Police Chief Kevin Considine praised the quick actions of Officers Griffiths and Ferreira, saying their bravery likely prevented at least one fatality. Read the full story.

🗳️ Second times the charm for Sea Camps

Brewster's special town meeting ended with the dramatic approval of an $11.4M Sea Camps Comprehensive Plan funding article, but only after an initial defeat and successful reconsideration vote. The article, which required a two-thirds majority, initially failed by just two votes before passing on the second attempt with 239 in favor and 109 against, despite concerns about rising property taxes and the town's debt load.

Voters also approved several other measures, including $4.2M in capital expenditures, Community Preservation Act funding for various projects, and zoning changes for the Bay Property Overlay District. The Sea Camps funding still requires approval at a special town election on December 3. Read the full story.

🐬 54 dolphins, 8 beaches, 1 busy week

IFAW's marine mammal rescue team faced an extraordinary week of dolphin strandings on Cape Cod, responding to 54 dolphins across multiple beaches, with 41 successfully released back to deeper waters. The team, which has handled 342 live dolphins in 2024 (five times their annual average), marked its 500th rescue of the year during this surge.

The mass stranding began November 9th, with 19 common dolphins found across eight locations in five Cape towns, complicated by rough winds and challenging surf conditions. Cape Cod's unique coastline makes it a global hotspot for dolphin strandings, though this year's numbers have reached historic highs. IFAW has been sharing their 27 years of rescue expertise globally, from training programs in Kenya to helping with Amazon river dolphin rescues. Read the full story.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🍷 The Dennis resident behind Josh Cellars

Joseph Carr, co-founder of Josh Cellars wines and Dennis resident, has turned his company's success into a platform for supporting Cape Cod's arts community. Named after his lumberjack father's nickname, Josh Cellars has grown from selling 5,000 bottles in 2009 to becoming the country's most popular wine over $10, selling 6.2 million cases in 2023 and recently going viral on social media.

While Carr partnered with Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits in 2011 to handle production and marketing, he remains the brand's ambassador and focuses on philanthropy, hosting fundraisers at his Scargo Lake home and donating wine to numerous local causes. His support has helped raise over $140,000 for the Cape Playhouse alone, while also benefiting the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and other organizations. Read the full story.
