CAPE DIGEST

New Habitat homeowner pays it forward 🏡

Two new Habitat for Humanity homes were dedicated on Phoebe Way last week, including one belonging to the Sargent family. Bernalynn Sargent shared her family's gratitude at the ceremony, describing how volunteers and community members helped build not just a house, but a home.

Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod has been building affordable homes since 1988, completing over 180 houses across the Cape. The experience has inspired Bernalynn to give back - she's already volunteered at fundraising events and will help coordinate the upcoming Dennis building project. Read the full story.

Captain’s 1780 House faces demolition 🚧

A Washington, D.C. couple wants to tear down their 240-year-old house in Wellfleet, but they're facing some pushback from the town's Historical Commission. The house at 90 Coles Neck Road, known as the Capt. Joseph Hatch House, has been in Matthew Walker's family for 86 years, but he and his wife Sally McCarthy say restoring the home would be too expensive.

While the owners claim the house is structurally unsound, sitting on old tree trunks and bricks instead of a proper foundation, some commission members who visited the site say it's in better shape than expected. The commission has triggered a demo delay that could last up to 18 months, suggesting the owners get a structural engineer's opinion rather than relying on pest control and builder assessments. A final hearing on the proposed demolition will be held in early November to determine the fate of this piece of Wellfleet history. Read the full story.

Liquid Gold? Summit explores new use for old problem 🚽

The Rich Earth Summit, happening this November in Vermont, aims to make a splash in the world of waste management by exploring better ways to use human urine as a resource. The three-day conference will include speakers from Cape Cod, including representatives from the Green Center and the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center, who will share their local studies on pee recycling.

The topic is especially relevant for Cape Cod, where nutrient pollution from septic systems is a significant environmental problem. Paris is already “going with the flow”, with their water agency covering up to 80% of development costs for projects that include urine recycling. Beyond helping the environment, the summit will also discuss how these solutions can help provide better sanitation for communities that need it. Read the full story.

County plans improvements for Cape seniors 📝

Barnstable County has signed an agreement to make Cape Cod more welcoming for older residents and those with dementia. The decision comes at an important time, as more than half of the Cape's residents are over 50 years old, and that number is expected to grow.

By joining the AARP Network and a state dementia program, the county will get help and advice on improving things like transportation, housing, and services that help seniors stay in their homes. The plan focuses on making life better for both older residents and caretakers. The county will work with local health groups to create programs and services that better serve the aging community. LOCAL BUSINESS

Hyannis restaurant opens its doors again 🍝

The Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis has reopened under new ownership after being closed for four years. Ricardo "Ricky" Conrado and partner Marcello Mallegni purchased the historic restaurant from Dave Colombo for $1.125 million last February, keeping many favorite menu items like the chicken homard. The restaurant, which opened October 11, has a rich history of hosting celebs and jazz performances, particularly featuring Lou Colombo and his musician friends.

While the new owners have streamlined the space, replacing antiques with local artwork, they plan to honor the restaurant's legacy while adding new features like breakfast service and outdoor dining. The 180-seat restaurant now serves dinner daily from 4 to 10 PM, with plans to revive live music pending approval from licensing officials. Read the full story.
