THE DIGEST
Breaking the fire chief glass ceiling 🚒
Lisa Albino is Barnstable County's first female fire chief, taking charge of Eastham's fire department after 38 years of service. Starting as a volunteer, Albino worked her way up through the ranks, inspired by the 1970s TV show "Emergency!"
Throughout her career, Albino has witnessed significant changes in both Eastham and firefighting. Key challenges include the town's growth, housing scarcity affecting recruitment, and new fire hazards like lithium-ion batteries. She's particularly concerned about occupational cancer risks for firefighters.
As chief, she'll oversee a $3.3 million budget while maintaining her commitment to 24/7 availability and mentoring aspiring female firefighters through Camp Fully Involved. Read the full story.

Cape’s fast and generous 🏁
Mashpee Commons transformed into a racetrack last Saturday for the 23rd annual Seaside Le Mans. Over 95 drivers piloted Formula One-style karts, raising $300K for five Cape Cod nonprofits. Shepley Wood Products/Andersen Windows took the checkered flag, but the real victory was for the community.
Since 2001, the event has raised over $9.5 million for local charities. Founded by DeWitt Davenport, the race promises all proceeds go directly to beneficiaries, thanks to The Davenport Companies underwriting the costs.
U.S. Representative William Keating, serving as Grand Marshal, lauded the event for uniting the community. As engines cooled, it was clear that Seaside Le Mans remains a powerful symbol of the Cape’s generous spirit. Read the full story.
No paradise for resort workers 🍹
The road to paradise has hit a bump in Hyannis. As the Cape Codder Hotel continues a $30 million makeover into a Margaritaville Resort, its contractor, Remby Contractors LLC, has landed in hot tequila. The Virginia-based company agreed to pay over $400K for violating Massachusetts labor laws, affecting 78 workers.
Attorney General Campbell's office uncovered issues ranging from unpaid wages to employee misclassification. The settlement, including nearly $300K in worker restitution, stemmed from an unannounced site visit by the Fair Labor Division.
As Remby works to comply with state laws, this incident serves as a stark reminder that even in the business of creating vacation dreamland, workers' rights can't be left behind in the sand. Read the full story.

Fighting fire with fire 🔥
The Cape Cod National Seashore is rekindling its approach to fire management. Superintendent Jennifer Flynn announced plans for a controlled burn at Fort Hill this fall.
While the Seashore has long been a "full suppression" park due to its proximity to homes and private property, there's growing recognition that controlled burns can actually prevent larger, catastrophic fires. This shift comes as locals voice concerns about accumulated fuel from downed trees and overgrown fields.
David Crary Jr., former fire management officer, highlighted the Cape's history of natural fires and the potential dangers of fuel buildup. The Seashore is now rebuilding its fire service program, hiring new staff and considering alternative methods like goat grazing for vegetation control.
Flynn also emphasized the role of local communities and homeowners in wildfire prevention, urging them to create defensible spaces and follow national guidelines. Read the full story.

An 81-year-old Yarmouth Port man, Peter Richmond, faces criminal charges following a tragic crash on August 30th. Richmond's 2020 Cadillac Escalade struck a disabled boat trailer on North Main Street in Yarmouth, resulting in the death of 14-year-old John Hughan from Norwell.
The teen was working with his uncle on the trailer, which had a broken axle, when the tragedy occurred. Two others were seriously injured and taken to Cape Cod Hospital.
